“Foley”

Shaped by the sound editor Jack Foley of Universal Studios, the English term “Foley” means as much as noise makers.
In her solo performance, artist Jo Bannon from Bristol deals with the archaic technique of producing handmade sounds for films and presents the audience with a mix of objective demonstration and absurdly funny thrillers. Bannon achieves the enormous tension and the special wit and charm of the performance through the absurdly exaggerated discrepancy between the banality of the objects used for generating noise (bits of wood, meat, vegetables and other elements from the household) and the incredible pictures that make up these noises trigger the viewer’s mental eye – dramatic scenarios that we know from many films and automatically retrieve – scenarios that we simply can not defend against, even though they are refuted at the same moment by the seen.
